Nightguards, Mouthguards and Retainers
Nightguards
Many people grind or clench their teeth at night without even realising it — a condition known as bruxism. Over time, this can lead to worn-down teeth, jaw pain, headaches, and even damage to dental restorations like fillings and crowns.
A custom-made nightguard is a simple, effective way to protect your teeth while you sleep. It fits comfortable over your teeth to create a protective barrier between your upper and lower teeth. This cushioning effect:
- Absorbs the pressure from grinding or clenching
- Prevents enamel wear and cracks
- Fracture of fillings or crowns
- Reduces strain on the jaw joints and muscles
Mouthguards
If you play contact sports or engage in activities where there is risk of facial injury, mouthguards should be worn to protect your teeth.
A mouthguard acts as a protective shield for your teeth, gums, lips, and jaw. By absorbing and dispersing the force from an impact, it helps prevent:
- Broken or chipped teeth
- Cuts to the lips, tongue, and cheeks
- Jaw fractures and joint injuries
Retainers
After completing braces or aligner treatment, it is important to wear retainers to ensure teeth alignment is maintained. Teeth can naturally shift over time, and without retainers, your teeth may experience a relapse where they gradually shift back to its original position.
There are two main types:
- Fixed (where a thin metal wire is bonded to the back of your teeth)
- Removable
- Essix/Vivera®- clear transparent plastic that fits snugly over your teeth
- Hawley retainers – Made of acrylic with a thin metal wire across the front teeth, adjustable and durable
Your dentist will guide you through wearing the removable retainers full time initially, and gradually transitioning to only night time wear.
